This article is about the Kisii- Migori highway and the tips when travelling through the highway’s towns. It is an overview on how to get to Migori and Isebania/Sirare towns from Kisii.
The Kisii-Migori-Isebania is tarmacked from Kisii. The highway passes through three major tribal regions i.e. the Gusii’s up to the Kamagambo region where you enter areas predominantly occupied by the Luo from Rongo, Kanga, Awendo to Migori. From Rongo to Migori towns, you will notice large plantations of sugarcane and the presence of sugarcane tractors, take caution when you are in this section of the highway. Large commercial vehicles mainly cargo trailers are also common due to the Sirare (Kenya-Tanzania) border. After Migori Town, most areas are predominantly inhabited by the Kuria and the Luo. Sirare is largely inhabited by the Kuria but it consists of large community of businesspeople from many backgrounds to the border trade.
A key point in the route is more of a shopping centre junction. To get to Rongo you will have to take the Migori junction in Kisii near Mash Park Hotel. The road is fairly straightforward with no major diversions. You will have to pass through several shopping centres from Kisii town, that is, Gesonso, Suneka (also has a diversion to Asumbi), Nyabigena, Nyanchenge (also has a diversion to Tabaka ) , Kamagambo. To get to Migori and Isebania(Sirare) you will have to proceed straight or turn right to the Rongo- Homabay route which proceeds to Homabay town on the shores of Lake Victoria. The road is well served by public vehicles mainly 14 seater passenger vehicles and a few buses mainly the Nya Ugenya coach.
